The Story of 420: Where It Came From and Why It Still Matters

Apr 9th 2026

Every year on April 20th, people across the country recognize a date that has quietly grown into one of the most well-known markers in cannabis culture. What makes 420 interesting isn’t just how widely it’s recognized, but how it started—small, specific, and almost accidental.

The most widely accepted origin traces back to the early 1970s in San Rafael, California. A group of high school students who called themselves “the Waldos” used “420” as a code. They would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. The phrase became shorthand between them—“420” meant it was time to meet.

Over time, that code spread beyond their circle. Through local connections and the broader music and cultural scene in Northern California, the term picked up momentum. Eventually, it moved into wider use, evolving from a private signal into something shared across communities. What began as a specific time became a date, and then something more recognizable: a tradition.

Today, 420 still carries that history with it, even as the meaning has expanded. It remains rooted in that original idea of meeting up, of sharing a moment, of setting aside time with intention. That’s part of why it has lasted. It was never about complexity. It was about connection.

For many, 420 has become a day to revisit familiar routines or explore something new. Some people lean into the social side of it, gathering with friends or stepping into larger events. Others keep it quieter, marking the day in a way that feels more personal. Both approaches reflect the same core idea—choosing to be present in the experience.

There’s also something meaningful about the way 420 has grown alongside broader conversations around cannabis. What was once coded and hidden is now more open, more discussed, and more understood. The tradition has stayed intact, even as the context around it has shifted.

At its best, 420 isn’t about doing more. It’s about being intentional with what you choose, appreciating quality, and giving yourself the space to enjoy it. That can look different for everyone, and that’s part of what makes it last.

At Bliss Family Farms, we’ve always believed in keeping things simple and considered—small batches, carefully selected strains, and an approach that respects the experience without overcomplicating it. If you’re taking part in 420 this year, however you choose to spend it, we hope it feels like time well spent.
